2996

Four freedoms:
The first is freedom of speech and expression,

everywhere in the world.
The second is freedom of everyone to worship God in his own way,
everywhere in the world.
The third is freedom from want...
everywhere in the world.
The fourth is freedom from fear...

anywhere in the world.
~ Franklin D. Roosevelt

Michael Benjamin Packer
World Trade Center

"He shouldn't have been in the building, except he was going to give the speech," recalled his wife,Rekha Packer.

Musical and Mechanical
Michael B. Packer had a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which came in very handy at his children's science fairs and birthday parties."When you walked into the house, you usually walked into a scientific experiment," said Ronald Soiefer, a close friend who had met Mr. Packer when they were Harvard undergraduates. One contraption had a microphone hooked up to a laptop computer, which recorded human voices and showed them as sound waves on a colored screen. Mr. Packer, 45, of Hartsdale, N.Y., had many other sides. He played the piano and, in his spare time, made harpsichords, a trade he had learned as a student at Phillips Exeter Academy and Harvard. He made sure that his children — Sarita, 11, and Jonathan, 7 — were steeped in the classics. In June, he and his wife, Rekha, took the children on a tour of the Aegean Islands, following in the footsteps of Homer's Ulysses.Mr. Packer, who was to be the keynote speaker at a technology conference at Windows on the World on Sept. 11, joined Merrill Lynch in 1999 as a leader of a major e-commerce initiative. "He was very good at managing things," said Mrs. Packer, who remembers most vividly how he coped with the family, the house, his job and her convalescence when she suffered a brain injury in 1990. "Nothing really got him down. We really miss him for that now."

Michael's Guest Book

Several months before the WTC attacks, Michael Packer offered to assist, pro-bono, the Lower Hudson Regional Information Center -- a non-profit, consortium of schools in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties -- in achieving our goal of being an organization synonymous with excellence. He was a world class business executive with a successful track record as a strategist, team builder and manager. When he first met Michael in August, we were impressed by his expertise and humor, as well as his genuine wish to help us. In one meeting, he established a bond of trust. We decided to get together again on September 14th, and we all had the highest hopes. We at the LHRIC were but a small part of Michael Packer's world but his kindness and sincerity were evident in each of our encounters.
~Peter Reilly, acquaintance

That every name, every face, every soul, every heartbeat should be made one. In the face of the tragedy we all lived through, it is the only prayer I have. Your tribute brings one more name, one more face, one more soul, one more heartbeat into the circle, and we keep living, not inspite of 9/11, but because of those who gave all.

Thank you for your piece of the puzzle.

Doesn't it say a lot about the human spirit, when so many people from all walks of life and whose blogs are so varied can band together for a very simple but touching tribute??

I have read quite a few of these tributes - each so different and each so effective in ensuring these people will be remembered -
I also tried to read a little from the associated blogs. Doing this provided me with an insight into the effect this tragedy had on people - not only the victims families but also the "you & me's" of the world - the bloggers.

I may live half a world away from where it happened, but I can assure you that our nation too remembers the fallen.

Great work Raggedy!

Don't know you name, but I suspect it is Ann.

That doesn't matter, Raggedy, what needs to be said is...

Great tribute to Michael Benjamin Packer, one of the fallen.

Webloafer is going to use the link page of all the bloggers who took the time to honor in tribute someone they didn't know, but someone we all mourn for. Oh, not like the mothers, brothers, fathers, neices, grandmothers, newphews, or twin brothor or sister mourns the murder of a loved one, but.

the 2,996 blogging project did in a couple of weeks what the media ignored for almost five years.

We are the media, we are bloggers, and we will replace the bad with good.

Have kept the list of blogger links and will be visiting, reading and pondering the goodness of the blogger WORLD.

Will also be tracing back to all the losers who took a name and didn't blog......

Can you say....moveon.org, and airamerica?

If anyone knows of a victim who was not honored because of the slimey left....please a name, I'll work overtime to get a tribute online for that person.

Love all you bloggers who care about the world, and can spare a few tears will they type.

IT was an emotional endeavor, but the few thousand tears I shed for Frank J. Koestner, was nothing compared to the buckets of grief and teardrops the loved one of Frank have shed.

Ann, old (60+) truckdriver webloafer will be back....to read and ponder, at least I still am living and breathing..

Michael Benjamin Packer didn't get to grow as old and cranky as me.

Wish he had had a chance to be old and proud. I'm proud of my oldness, and pray for the young people of this world......

Your tribute is excellent. It's such a sad waste of one of our best. Our society goes to great efforts to produce such people. They are our leaders. We set up a system to give them opportunity and freedom to grow and cultivate. The talented and the very bright, they are our treasures. And then many like this one on 9/11 are gone, our leaders, our best, gone for nothing, for senselessness.

Thank you for posting that beautiful video! Brought tears to my eyes as all my memories of 9/11 came flooding back.

He played the piano and, in his spare time, made harpsichords, a trade he had learned as a student at Phillips Exeter Academy and Harvard. He made sure that his children — Sarita, 11, and Jonathan, 7 — were steeped in the classics. In June, he and his wife, Rekha, took the children on a tour of the Aegean Islands, following in the footsteps of Homer's Ulysses.

I am both a piano teacher very partial to harpsichord and a homeschool teacher of classic literature. Mike and I share two common bonds beyond our bond as Americans. So sad that he's gone, because of Islamic murderers. Not fair!

What a fun and cool guy. Thanks for giving us a glimpse into his life and those he interacted with...

I watched that video on another site and cried because I actually knew of someone who died there (because of the 2996 project)as opposed to when it actually happened. I was in shock then, but had no faces to put with the tragedy.

And now we do...I will never see anything 9/11 related without thinking of Tim and you probably won't ever think of it without thinking of Michael.
